  390. [REMOVED] CASEY, John, NC Militia? Pension statement: S30308*. More in Dr. Bobby Moss' Patriots at the Cowpens. CLH: John Casey is listed on the battleofcamden site, but from the fact that he was one of William Washington's dragoons, and from the sequence in which his engagements are listed, it is likely that he was not at the first battle of Camden but at Hobkirks Hill.
  391. PA BOISSEAU, John, Pvt., Dinwiddie Co. VA Militia, Capt. George(?) Pegram, Col. Ralph Faulkner, Gen. Stevens. Commentary on battle. Pension statement: S3040 (CLH). Also, see here.
CLH: This PA includes such a detailed account of the Battle of Camden that I initially suspected Boisseau had brought a history book into court. His description of later events that wouldn't have made the history books is equally detailed and correct, however, so I believe his claim that he was relying on his own vivid recollections. Contrary to the Guilford Dudley's recollection, ..., Boisseau states that when the Americans and British first encountered each other it was too dark for battle. He also says that the Virginia militiamen did at least fire one volley before fleeing, and he gives the impression that not all fled in panic.

    2/9/2008
  392. [REMOVED] LOVE, William. Pension statement: W956. More in Dr. Bobby Moss' "Patriots at Kings Mountain".
CLH: Love is on the ... list; his widow here says he lived near Camden, but she does not say he fought there.
  393. PA DEVEAUX, Peter, Major, Georgia Militia, aide de camp to Gen. Gates (& others). Pension statement: S37886. (WTG)
WTG: ... claims to have been Gates’ ‘aid de camp’ at Camden. His application is supported by an affidavit of Thomas Pinckney.
  394. PA EATON, Christopher, Pvt., Surry Co. NC Militia, Capt. Absolam Bostick, Gen. Rutherford. Pension statement: R3214. Same as Christopher VALENTINE. Also, see here. Use control-f and search for "3214". Also, see here. See DARNAL, Joseph, given as verification.
CLH: Eaton's first declaration appears to be valid, so I think he is correctly listed on the battleofcamden site. (Also listed as Christopher Valentine for reasons explained in this PA.) He states, as did Joseph Darnall (S2515) and as O'Kelley also does, that Captain Absalom Bostick was also at the Battle of Camden.
  395. BOSTICK, Absolam, Capt., Surry Co. NC Militia, Maj. Wilston, Col. Martin Armstrong. Per EATON, Christopher (CLH). See HARDIN, Henry (WTG), See ANGEL, John (WTG). Fishing Creek? See COCKERHAM, Daniel (WTG). See VERNON, Isaac (WTG).
  396. PA FAULKENBERRY, David. Sgt. of guard, guarding baggage during battle. Pension statement: S3350 (CLH). More in Dr. Bobby Moss' Roster of SC Patriots....
CLH: David Faulkenberry is listed at the battleofcamden site, correctly I think, even though he modestly says he was not directly in the battle but detailed to guard the baggage wagons. His son says that after the battle his father collected guns and baggage scattered by the retreating troops. Faulkenberry mentioned a Capt. John Caneston also at the battle, but his memory was very shaky.
  397. PA HARMON, Edward, Pvt., Delaware Rgt., Capt. Robert Kirkwood. Free black. Pension statement: S36000 (CLH)
CLH: Here is the PA of one of the deponents I mentioned with the ... transcription for Aaron Easor. This Edward Harmon is a new name among the Battle of Camden soldiers. The only thing about his deposition that raises doubt is his statement that he enlisted in 1777 and "from the time of his enlistment to his discharge he served in the southern states in the Army under the command of Generals Gates and Green." The supporting deposition by Mitchell Kershaw does make it clear that Harmon was at Gates's Defeat, however. Kershaw is another new name to add to the list – captured at the battle. Kershaw received a bounty land warrant, but unfortunately there is no pension application for him. In the 1820 federal census for Sussex County DE, Edward Harmon is recorded as a "Free Colored Person" over 45 with a female over 45, a male under 14, and a male and a female 14 -26.. ...the error about his serving in the South since 1777 was not necessarily his.
  398. KERSHAW, Mitchell. Lt.Col.(?), DE Rgt. Captured. On prison ship at Charles Town. See HARMON, Edward (CLH).
CLH: Kershaw is another new name to add to the list – captured at the battle. Kershaw received a bounty land warrant, but unfortunately there is no pension application for him.
  399. PA MARTIN, Gideon, Pvt., Amherst Co. VA Militia, Capt. Azariah Martin, Col. James (George?)Lucas. Detached at Pee Dee River to guard ferry and care for sick. Pension statement: S31232 (CLH)
. See MARTIN, Azariah for discussion of following comment.
CLH: If ... correct, then Capt. Azariah Martin was not personally in command of his company at the Battle of Camden.

  407. STEWART, Alexander, Lt., DE Regment, Capt. Robert Kirkwood. Captured. See CLARKE, John (CLH).
CLH: Clarke was a recruiter in Delaware during the Battle of Camden, but in the fifth paragraph he provides some names of officers who may have been there, some of whom were apparently not on the muster roll and are therefore not listed on the battleof camden site. In particular he states, In Capt. Kirkwood's Company – Alexander Steeward [sic: Stewart] was Lieutenant, and in his answer to the fifth interrogatory at the end he refers to "Alexander Stewart, taken prisoner at the battle of Camden in 1780.
  408. PA DARNALL, Joseph, Pvt., Surry Co. NC Militia, Capt. Absalom Bostick, Col. Martin Armstrong, Gen. Rutherford. Not in actual battle. Captured, escaped. Probably at Rugeley's Mill. Pension statement: S2515 (CLH). Submitted by BGM. Also, see here.
CLH: the name is consistently spelled with two Ls in the PA
  409. HAMBLETON, George, Capt., 5th MD Rgt. See HAMILTON, George. See DAWSON, Joseph (CLH)
CLH: Dawson is on the battleofcamden list, but not his Captain.
  410. BENSON, Perry, Capt., 5th MD Rgt. (Solomon Barrott, W703, Dr. Bobby Moss' ). See DAWSON, Joseph (CLH).
CLH: Dawson is on the battleofcamden list, but not his Captain.
  411. PA BOND, Wright. Sgt., Cumberland Co. VA Militia, Capt. Robert Anderson. Pension statement: W3382 (CLH). Not found in McAllister.
    CLH:
A hand-written note on the typed summary in the file observes that the deposition doesn't explicitly say that Bond was in the Battle of Camden, but I think it is very likely that he, as well as Capt. Anderson were there:
"that he held the appointment of sergeant and marched under Cap Robert Anderson to Hillsborough in North Carolina where they joined other troops under the command of General Stevens and within sight of the regular Troops under Genl. Gates, but was not allowed to join them but marched to near Camden in South Carolina where they did join them the day before the battle, known by the name of Gates defeat. that after the Battle the Troops being all dispersed and scattered. He assembled with other troops at Hillsborough, which was about the close of the Tour."
